I feel like making Dumbledore THE ONLY GAY CHARACTER and also making him have to be super in the closet and live alone forever sends a horrid message if we’re all being frank here.
It was also the 90s; if JKR…
Also, a little silly thing that someone’s probably already mentioned; throughout the books Dumbledore had problems with ‘those crazy people interfering with our school’. They flipped their shit about Remus teaching and about the Chamber of Secrets and all sorts of weird things - I was always under the impression that had he been an openly gay headmaster the conservative wizards would have scooted their kids away from Hogwarts as fast as they could.
Muggle headteachers worried enough about that in the 90s.
Section 28 (a section of the Education Act that prevented schools from promoting homosexuality and which school management often interpreted as preventing the discussion of homosexuality) might not have been in force in magical schools but that was certainly the educational climate in the UK back then. Things aren’t perfect now but the repeal of Section 28 during the first Blair government has at least made that better.
I was at school in Britain in the 90s, and we had our fair share of Umbridges around…
Yeah, I was thinking about the Muggle equivalent (not just in relation to the book but the story; not just about censorship of the series but of how we relate to JK’s world) and even now I’m pretty sure that a headmaster of a similar structure to Hogwarts (even on a smaller scale) in the Muggle world would never be openly gay or queer in any way at least without big repurcussions.
Living the cynical life 2011.
^^This is an interesting addition. We don’t really know what attitudes the wizarding world had towards homosexuality — JKR has made opposing statements about it.
That uncool moment when pointing out gay subtext earns the response “Not everyone is gay, ok?”
No, obviously not. If they were, I wouldn’t have to search out subtext for my sanity.
Wolfstar is my OTP 4eva (in any fandom), but that doesn’t mean I hate or resent Tonks.

Hurrah for queering relationships! Not everyone subscribes to a monogamous, heteronormative/homonormative view of love!
Hey! Good point. Relationships don’t follow rules.

i seriously think jo rowling unconsciously wrote harry gay…

…or bi… or something. he just can NOT be 100% straight.
i.e. he’s not affected as much by fleur as ron seems to be… ron walked up the stairs to the girl’s dormitory first so it changed to a slide before hary could go on… harry doesn’t really check out girls/woman… etc.
Totally agree. I just don’t think gender and physical sexuality are as important to Harry at what goes on in the heart and mind. His attraction to Ginny wasn’t based on her pretty face or rockin’ bod, but on her “blazing look”.
