Looking at this made me think about the themes of Wolfstar as a whole, and why this work is such an integral part of our identity as a community and why its so widely known and adored. It makes me wonder why it highlights that we all identify with and find common ground.

Of course, Remus and Sirius are the prominent features - how couldn’t they be? But I also noticed that “Black” is much smaller and less noticeable. I sort of think that perhaps that smybolises one of the most important things for me, when I’m thinking about Wolfstar - the idea that family is much more then blood. Who you are isn’t dictated by your last name, or how “pure of blood” you are - you can make yourself and you can absolutely build your own family and your own life, there is nothing about you that is predestined.

Also, some of the words I noticed the most were “know”, “think” and “time”. To me, these are central themes and they feel quite personal. If you know something, truly, then you don’t need to say, its something you feel and are sure of in the core of yourself. If think a lot of the time, the draw of Wolfstar is the journey of finding out who you are - of knowing yourself completely. At school, the pressure to be certain things must have been overwhelming, especially for these two. Sirius is fighting his name and his very blood, everything he has ever been taught; Remus is also fighting his blood, this part of himself he is deeply ashamed of and frightened of, something he has to hide at all costs. This feeling of loneliness and isolation is something I connect to my identity as “queer” and it just makes the struggle they have seem so real to me. After school, there is doubt and fear and loss and hopelessness and desolation. And then trust and love and loss again.
“Think” and “time” are much the same; they are concepts that exist only within the individual. There is no such thing as “time”, and yet its one of those things that dictates the entirity of what we know - those seven special years of joy and happiness. The short, dark years of doubt, betrayal and fear. 12 years of it in the dark, both suffering and alone and without their other half. Time limits are the essance of Wolfstar.

One of the biggest words is “like”; that struck me if only because its such a… weak word, almost. It lacks conviction. It is non-commital. To me this, in context to their relationship, is important to how I precieve Wolfstar because I feel there is a fear, almost, of becoming attached and of expressing the deepest emotions. Both Remus and Sirius are people who have grown up as individuals, as segregated from their society and therefore independant to the point it can be damaging. They keep their inner selves hidden out of fear and necessity, and I think, at least to me, that Wolfstar is about breaking down those barriers and finding you can be yourself and you can be loved completely, warts and all. It is always dangerous, but it is sometimes so very worth the risk
